"But seeing the wind, he became afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, 'Lord, save me!'" - Matthew 14:30

Life is filled with storms. It may be smooth sailing for a while, and then suddenly a storm comes. The boss informs you that you no longer have a job; your spouse files for divorce; or the doctor says those dreaded words, "You have cancer."

Jesus appeared to his disciples when they were at sea in a storm. Because He was walking on water, Peter said, "Lord, if it's You, command me to walk in the water with You." He did and Peter stepped out of the boat in faith. He was doing okay as long as he focused on Jesus. But suddenly, he thought about what he was doing and looked at the darkness of the sea. Amidst the howling winds, he was overcome with fear and began to sink. At the last moment, he cried out to Jesus to save him and Jesus did.

Taking his eyes off Jesus and focusing on the dangers of the storm overwhelmed Peter. But God is bigger than any storm. Focus on Him in faith and He'll give you the strength to get through the storms of life victoriously.

SWEET! - davo

What a timely devotion! Not only with spring storms and tornado warnings, but with all the recent Christianity vs. atheism discussions in the RFTH archives! (Just got a chance to catch up on some!)

I once had an elderly patient who was a well respected professor of science at a well respected university. His life story as a scientist and an educator was fascinating!

He was in his seventies when we met, and we had alot of fun discussing lots of things. When it came to religion I shyly explained my experiences with Christ. He did not belittle or act as if I was silly or stupid. He simply could not believe because he thought the Bible was merely a collection of myths.

I asked him what he believed and with respect I listened. He was very excited, as he told me that he had become convinced that many ancient ruins and symbols drawn on rocks were evidence of visitors from outer space. He believed these aliens would soon return to earth to show us all the "truth" and that we would all join in a one world religion based not on the God of the Bible, but of the "creator" intelligence and the old religions would not be tolerated.

Sounded pretty "new age" to me, and it sounded very hard to believe! I tried to explain the relationship I have found with Christ through the Bible, prayer, and my own personal relationship with God!!

He chose to believe that there were aliens of superior intelligence who would lead the poor ignorant earthlings into a new level of existence. I believe I have already entered a new level of existence through Christ. He thought Christ was a fairy tale, I think Christ is the Creator/Intelligence who made not only us, but any living being, including any aliens we may not have been introduced to!!

Today's devotion is so important!! Look at the storms we face in a world that wants so desparately to believe in something, anything, except humbling itself before Christ!

Back in 1995 I had a big storm in my life. I was putting some gutters on some apartments in Atlanta and the gutter got tangled in the high power electrical lines. I was immediately hurt real bad due to the amount of electricity that had gone thru my body. I had a great amount of damage to my body and still today I suffer from this ordeal. I was in a wheel chair for about eight months and out of work for over a year. We didn't have the money coming in to supply our needs but thru the love of God and his people we never missed a meal and all of our bills were paid. Thru all of this I found out what it meant to totally trust in God. Some might say "if he is a loving God why did he allow this to happen?" Well I came to realize that I had seven different jobs at the church not including being a minister but the truth is I was not dedicated to either of them. I learned that I needed to trust him to lead me into the jobs he had for me, not taking them on myself. Now I am the Pastor of a wonderful Church and I am having the time of my life. So if we would all trust Him and lean on Him he will direct our paths. Have a great day. - Jerry

Thank you, Marti and Jerry, for your comments which are very relevant to the devotion and which serve to edify other believers and probably make unbelievers want to know more about Christianity. God bless you for sharing. - Janice
