Marriage And Civilization Mar 13 2008

"...This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." - Genesis 2:23

Even though every major religion has defined marriage as a lifetime commitment between a man and a woman, some in the 21st century want to redefine it. But even if you leave God out of the discussion, there are good reasons why mankind defined marriage that way:

1. For the civilization of men. Men have a tendency toward violence and to be animalistic when lustful passion strikes. Society has seen marriage as a protection against that.

2. For the protection and security of women. Men are physically stronger, and because of men's animalistic tendencies, marriage has historically been for the physical protection and security of women.

3. For the welfare of the children. Growing up in a family with a healthy and stable marriage between a man and a woman has been the best environment for a child's development and maturity. It's how children learn to deal with men and women responsibly and respectfully.

The civilization of men, the protection and security of women, and the welfare of children are three key reasons that marriage is to be between a man and a woman.

Yes, report it Nevermind

Is it also ok to marry multiple women and have concubines like the heroes of the Bible? Cause I think I could get on board with that.

Erik, you would be like all other men you wouldn't be able to handle the pressure. Just think of the honey-do list you would have

Unfortunately for them when the "heroes" of the Bible started to take on more wives and concubines after God told them not to, the Israelites would be conquered by other nations. They would start to allow the worship of the idols of the nations that the wives came from and that would always lead to God's punishment. Whenever the Isrealite Kings would tear down the idols of the other nations and start to obey God again then the Lord would pour out his blessings on them again. Just an observation. Becky

You've got a point there, Jerry. I'm sticking with the concubines for now. Even they are more trouble than they're worth sometimes.

Erik...Do you relate to Matthew 13:18 ? Some of your past entries make me think you might.

Erik, the God never condoned having multiple wives. The heros in the Bible did it despite God's advice. And all of them paid a heavy price for the practice.

Erik,
If you study the lives of these men, they had alot of problems that was brought on because of the multiple marriages. Yes men had problems who had only one wife but still it is best just to have the one. I know when the people came to Christ and told him Moses gave a bill of divorcment for fornication but actually the one guilty of the sin, they were stoned, thus giving the other partner the chance to marry without sinning.

Erik, Can you believe how many Germans were wrong about following Hitler? Sometimes people are just misguided by their own minds. They are easily led astray from the way of God. I have my doubts that you are serious about wanting to follow in the manner of those you listed regarding polygamy. You seem too intelligent to take on that burden.
