Patience With OthersFeb 19 2008

"Patience of spirit is better than haughtiness of spirit." - Ecclesiastes 7:8

To have patience with other people is one of life's greatest qualities.

In Lincoln, The War Years, Sandberg writes of Lincoln's patience with his cabinet in the most difficult days of American history. Many in his cabinet felt they were a whole lot smarter than the President. They made a point of letting other people know it, too. Some mocked and belittled him; one even call him a dumb gorilla. These words often got back to President Lincoln and his wife. She despised them; yet, he was incredibly patient. When he died, these same men realized they had served under one of the greatest Americans who had ever lived.

Patience with others is a Christ-like quality. Ask God for patience but watch out if you do! God just might put some difficult people around you to try your patience. This is a part of learning patience and an answer to your prayer.

This devotion could not have been more timely for me this morning and affirming of my reaction when my patience was tried first thing. I had to have lab work done and got there alittle after 7:00AM to find the lab did not open until 7:30. Others who arrived after me jumped in the lab door faster than I did taking my rightful first place. Then the paperwork was not there that I had been told would be there to authorize the work so I had to wait until 8:00AM for another doctor office to open. I was trying so hard not to be complaining to the receptionist because I knew it was not her fault. I kept thinking if I were not a Christian I would have behaved so differently. When I got home I found this devotion about patience. Thank You, God, and thanks RFTH for having the right words for the right time. - Janice

Yes. We need to remember that we are called to act differently because of he who lives in us. I know some Christians where I can tell patience is not their strong suit. While patience is a fruit of the spirit, we have to willingly let the spirit do his work if we struggle in that area, or it will affect our witness to a world that expects us to act differently, but at times does not see evidence of that. - Rick Y

for the past seven years.my life has been a roller coaster of emotions and as hard as I try it seems God doesn't care.I am a Christain but haven't felt the joy of knowing Jesus. someone told me we don't all have a Damacus experience. But my life and my children{grown} have not been good and my prayers have not been answered for them. I see others get blessing after blessing but I feel God doesn't care about us.I've tried praying specially and I've tried laying it at his feet to do with as He will. But he has ignored my prayers. I try to live a good christain life. I'm in Church every Sunday, teach Sunday School, work hard, giving the company more than they require, take care of aged parent, butsomething is wrong. I don't know how to do more. Doesn't God care about my situation? I want to be blessed and my children to be blessed too. - jane

Jane,
It's very hard to describe, but it sounds like God is bringing you to a breaking point. There is a difference between wanting to lay something at his feet and actually doing it. It is, to me, the difference between faith and wishing. Trust in his timing and that glory will be brought to him, and all things will work to that. So let God be the source of your strength and not yourself. Pray for the ability to discern that difference. - david

Jane: God answers every prayer, but we don't always like the answer. It's just like our kids. They think they know what is best, and they will ask us for things that we know are not the best for them. So, we do not grant those requests. But, we do answer their every request, even though the answer may be "no", or "not right now". God wants the best for you in this life, and in the next, but only He knows the perfect timing and how all things will work together to bring that about for you.

Feelings can ebb and flow. God does not. You cannot know His purposes, but if you are truly interested in His will, then you can know that the best will eventually be done, even if you do not understand it right now. - Rick Y
