The Varsity
"...yet not My will, but Yours be done." - Luke 22:42
"What'll ya have? What'll ya have? What'll ya have?"
If you are from the Atlanta area, these familiar words exemplify quick service for tasty food from a restaurant steeped in tradition. Many people feel that prayer is like putting in an order for what we want. Yet prayer is most of all about getting to know God and His will for our lives. One of the ways God teaches us His will is by not always giving us what we want.
You say, "Well, what's wrong with getting what I want?" Nothing, if it's God's best. But if it's not, there are always negative consequences, so be careful what you ask for!
Prayer is powerful in allowing us to connect with God. But it's not at all about God simply saying, "What'll ya have?" It is about discovering what He wants for our lives.
Perhaps the question should be reversed to, "Lord, what'll ya have of me?"

This is so true. WE forget what our purpose for God is and we are like children in a candy store. This is a powerful message. - ladonna
We should not ask God for things we want or to solve our problems. We should ask him to give us the strength to do for ourselves. - Greg
What a wonderful devotion. I can just hear those servers at the V with their hurried voices loudly asking, "What'll ya have?" I am glad God does not come at me like that because sometimes I don't know what to say and the Holy Spirit has to groan to God for me. Life would be so easy if we only had to ask God for a chili slaw dog, rangs, and a frosted orange. You are right that we need to ask God what He wants of us. - Janice
I love the analogy of our prayers being the same as an order at The Varsity. Most of the time we are asking God for things that are bad for us and will eventually kill us (spiritually). Asking for more money, lack of suffering and the like is equivalent to ordering those artery-clogging chilli cheese dogs. - Scott
Amen, this devotion has blessed my spirit. Also, humbly lead me to seek the true, solid things in this life versus materials. - Zion
yes we all need to ask, "Lord, what'll ya have of me". with everyday life we forget about what needs he already give us. instead we find are selves saying why me Lord. but really is why not me! - rick
