Smorgasbord Religion Jul 10 2007

"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." - 1 John 4:1

It is so trendy to practice smorgasbord religion - a little dose of Jesus, a little pinch of Buddha, a little Mohammed here and a little New Age thought there. It makes you sound so "with it"...so spiritual.

But it is fundamentally dishonest. It is an insult to each religion, for it is like spiritual looting. It is a classic refashioning of God into your own chic image. And it is a reminder of the many intellectual airheads today. Make a decision for crying out loud! But don't be a phony for every faith. They don't say the same thing. They don't believe the same things.

Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, the Life. No one comes to the Father but through me." Either He lied or was terribly insane - or is who He said He is. This is in direct conflict with every other religion. With Him, it's all or nothing. I believe He is the truth about God.

Make a decision about Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, or whomever. But don't insult them all with this airhead pseudo-sophisticated practice of smorgasbord religion.

Good Morning;
I am in agreement with your thought and I personally think that we trended right into the fast food religion and I think GOD deserves all of our time, not "the most" time.
GOD BLESS

I agree with 1 John 4:1 since I am a Christian and of course with you. It amazes me when we all read from the same Bible and Jesus says I'm the Way, the Truth and the Life and yet we don't believe such??? My question then is do you believe everything you read in the Bible?

I look forward to opening my computer each day to see a word form the Lord. I am a Christian that has loved and served Jesus for a long time and I can't seem to get enough of Him. You contribute to the desire for more of Him. I send the devotionals to family and friend often.
Thank you for spreading the good news.

This is a wonderful devotion in this day and age. I have many friends who can't believe that I believe there is only one way to get into heaven, through faith in Jesus Christ. They ask,how can I be so close minded. I think, how can they be so "open-minded"? Does anything go?
Thank you for this devotion and all the others. I always get something out of each one.
In Christ,

You have described a person I know. It is very hard to discuss spiritual matters with her because it feels like she is slipping on ice going this way and that and never getting anywhere. Actually her life is slipping away. Jesus is the only Way. Thank you for this devotion which mirrored my experience with a person of the "smorgasbord" persuation.

I particularly enjoyed this devotion today because I go to a liberal university and this is exactly what is occurring. It hurts me to hear what some of my teachers and the students around me believe or their apathy/complacency towards believing in anything. I am constantly being told you can be spiritual without being religious, but that concept is irrelevant and it makes me desperately want to explain to my teacher and class what the truth is.

I acknowledge the truth of Krisna, Moses, Siddharta, Jesus, Mohammed, and Darwin. For all truth comes from the one God. Playing all the religions against each other is like playing brand name loyalty. It is mere economics. There is nothing in any of these religions that precludes the others from being valid and true. Your way simply perpetuates the distrust and hatred that has led to war and most of the world's problems. Why don't you wake up and stop spreading the hate? Instead, spread the love that each of these messengers from Deity espoused.

Thomas,

I want to thank you for being so honest. I feel at times some people don’t truly share their thoughts out of fear and with you that is not the case. I know the message that Jesus is the only way at times can be offensive. Last month I was sharing sharing the truth of the message of Jesus to a Hindu and he refused to accept it because it was too restrictive. All of these conversations are apart of God’s plan, including your email. For you, let me say this: Jesus is the ONLY ONE from your list that made the revolutionary claim that HE and ONLY HE (Jesus) is the way to God. He is also the only one from your list that rose from death to life. Think about this: Of his 11 closest friends and followers, not one stood by Jesus side to claim he spoke the truth right after his death on the cross. They all felt that he was really just a good teacher, like you mention. However, within three days of his death, all 11 of these men went on to proclaim that Jesus really DID speak the truth and died for sharing their offensive message that Jesus is the only way. You see, Thomas, it is in the death and resurrection of Jesus that makes him very different from the others mention on your list. I would recommend the book “More Than a Carpenter” if you are willing to take a second look at why Jesus was different. Meanwhile, I am confident that all the Christians who look to RFTH and read your message will be praying that God helps you see the truth that Jesus brings, which is truly and only in Love. After all, what more love can you show someone by helping them find their eternal salvation in Jesus.

Lee

We have a speech on our site that was given by Dr. William Lane Craig entitled "God and Allah." Just type "Allah" in the search box, and you'll find it.
