A Failure Made Good Oct 16 2012

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him; who have been called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28 NIV

With only twelve official holidays in the USA, it requires a remarkable occasion or success to have a holiday. We have holidays to celebrate our independence, memorialize our veterans, as well as contemplate all the things we are thankful for. We also honor great people and their accomplishments. Holidays are so scarce that all 44 of our presidents have to share a single day! When you think about it, there are only two people who have achieved such distinction that they have a holiday of their own – Martin Luther King and Christopher Columbus. And you know what is strange about that? Columbus failed!

That’s right. Christopher Columbus was on a mission to find a shorter trade route to India, but he missed it by over nine thousand miles. Nine thousand miles! However, that failure put a spotlight on new lands that motivated future explorers, attracted settlers, and eventually resulted in the creation of great nations. It was one of history’s biggest blunders, yet we celebrate that failure every year with one our scarce national holidays.

So, the next time you think you’ve made a big mistake, think about the legacy of Christopher Columbus. You’ll see that God can turn your blunder into something great.

Another great message! But to set the record straight, two presidents had their own special days: Washington and Lincoln both had memorial holidays in February. During a time of threats and upheaval (mostly unknown to the public), the government became obligated to officially honor MLK. However, they couldn't add another paid federal holiday (which costs the taxpayers $$$$$s), so Washington and Lincoln lost their individual days and were lumped into one "President's Day."

This is one of the great passages of the Bible. Note that it applies to:
1) "those who love him", not everyone;
2) those "who have been called". Have you heard the shepherds voice? and,
3) that it is "according to His purpose", which will probably not be clear to you at the time. You will have to trust God. His purpose is never to harm you, but only to prosper you.

PS: Just so no one thinks that I am naive, I am going through one of the worst years of my life. I won't bore you with details, but there is nothing in it that fells the least bit "good". My wife is suffering equally. This verse gives us hope, where we frankly can see very little. Comfort, where there is only pain.

Hope is a difficult thing to find in the midst of life's struggle. We also are having a terrible year. Many tears, more than i thought possible. Yet, comfort has come in surprising ways. One was at a concert, in the midst of 3000 people, the speaker shared scriptures that were for us alone. It was like God had his eye right on us and we were the only ones in the room. It was so clear to us that He sees us and the road we are on. I have clung to that portion of scripture for almost 8 months now.

Lord, I pray for grant and his wife right now in this moment. May they somehow sense you holding them in this time. Break through in their difficuly and give them a glimpse of you at work. Help them persevere and not give up. Speak to their hearts and encourage them in a way that can only be from you. May they be enabled to pour out their hearts before you and trust in you in spite of the silence they might be experiencing. I lay them before you Lord, knowing that even across the nations, you know who they are and what they are going through.

I read these Testimonies and they Break my Heart...But the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah...And here is The Deal from an old Poker Player:

"I got a Girdle according to the Word of God and put it on my Loins...Then I went and Hid it...take the Girdle from there...the Girdle was Marred and Good for Nothing."

Now I have cried as many Tears as Jeremiah--But sometimes crying just isn't enough...sometimes we cry for ourselves out of Pride.

We can be absolutely Broken and Proud...Sometimes we get Baskets of Good Figs and sometimes we Get the Rotten Stuff.

And the Rotten Stuff really Stinks...

But someday Guys? We will Be Together.

"For we know that the whole Creation Groans and Travails in Pain..."

Great point. Wrong person to use. Christopher columbus was a rapist and a murder. He also helped steal the Native Americans land and bring diseases to America. He dosent deserve a day.

The explorers of the 15th and 16th centuries were not missionaries. They were adventurers and traders in search of riches and new lands. As the exploration of the New World occurred, a great exchange developed. Foods and resources of the the Americas were introduced into Europe, grains and animal (horses - cattle) were to change the nomadic nature of the native. Disease from various areas spread to others and the effect of that still occurs today.
To dismiss Columbus as some king of evil engineer behind all of this is to overstate his purpose and ability. On a grand scale, the world was made smaller. This continue today and we still face the challenges of the merging of peoples and cultures.
