What Do You Really Believe? Aug 21 2012

"In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." - Matthew 23:28

If you’ve been to China in the last few years, you know they have embraced capitalism with a passion while still professing to be communist. But professing to be one thing and doing another is not unique to communism in China. It’s the case for many who call themselves Christians and yet live the way they want to live.

A recent Rasmussen poll found that 81% of Americans believe that Jesus was the Son of God, yet 57% of evangelical church attenders said they believe many religions can lead to eternal life.

Now those two stats show a huge disconnect between belief and practice, between professing faith and living it. It’s called hypocrisy and it’s the number one reason people outside the church say they have no interest in Christianity.

Whether you’re a communist or a Christian, practice what you preach — or at least have the integrity to call yourself something else. Actions reveal what you really believe, no matter how much you profess what you are.

I like this devotion, but it gets me thinking about the differences in denominations. I have always been curious how everyone can be right and wrong at the same time. Everyone is right because they all believe in Jeuse (christianity), but everyone is wrong becuase each denomination tells you to practice christianity in a little bit different way. This has always been my greatest stubbling block to fully embracing christ in my life.

Kelsey, the greatest warriors for God have never worried about denominations and theology. Applying Christian faith is much simplier then that.

1) Read Jesus' words: "Love the Lord with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself."
2) Do it.
3) Repeat for the rest of your life.

There are lots of people in the church who argue endlessly about internal denominational or theological conflicts: infant or adult baptism, old or young earth, dispensational or covenential, pastors or priests, full or limited atonement, open or closed foreknowledge... it's all a sideshow.

I wonder what the church would look like if we spent as much time trying to make new Christians as we do trying to "correct" the beliefs of those who already are?

Kelsey Rae, While I agree with some of what Gunk has to say, I take exception to the way that he says it. He does not have to be offensive. No church or denomination is perfect because they are made up of imperfect humans. Turn to Christ and then find a church that makes a true effort to follow the Bible.

NOTE: We removed the comment that Judy is referring to. We also found it to be inappropriate in tone and language.

Kelsey let me try this Again Dear. They took down my Post which I guess was Way off Base so I am about to get sick of all of this.

Have you ever seen yourself thrown down on a Cross to see the Lives of others saved by your Sacrifice?

I Have...

Have you ever seen the Sky on Fire? Have you ever kept one of your Babies by Yourself with no Income? I have kept them Both.

Did you see any of the Thousands of People who Died today?

Honey--Just listen to the Lord. Something tells me he Whispers to you. Talks about Calling--there is nothing like the Lord's Whispers.

So Judy has taken Exception--Well Guess what? That won't be the First or Last Gal who takes Exception. Gals are Great at taking Potshots.

Sweetheart--Let God Embrace You. You are Young and Highly Educated and have the entire World of Christ in Front of You.

Forget about all this other Stuff--The Sky is On Fire.

I believe that the "Apostles Creed" and/or the "Nicene Creed" is accepted by all of the "major denominations". They both say that we believe in the holy catholic (one) church.
It is Jesus Christ's Church. He is the head and we are the body. Denominations an unfortunate result of man's desire to be in control.
As far as "many religions can lead to eternal life", just read the Gospel of John. There is only one Way.
His name is Jesus, the Son of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity.

I have been up all Night thinking about this Kelsey.

There is a Road around Atlanta--We call it 285. Now, one can get on 285 and Circle the City in about 2 Hours in Off-Hour Traffic. Plenty of Gas Stations so you can go Round and Round all you would like.

But? You can also take 75 South to Valdosta or 20 East to Augusta or 20 West to Birmingham or 85 South to Montgomery or 75 North to Chattanooga or 85 North to Greenville. or 16 out of Macon south to Savannah.

Now look--I have been down all those Roads.

But? We would not know which Road to take if there were not Signs and Signals to show us The Way. Job's Wife said: "Curse God and Die..."
That was a Signal and a Sign.

You have Great Parents--They are Educators. You have a Fiance'...I'm sure they Approve. But you also have Jesus Calling...

Rick Warren in his Book writes "Life is a Series of Problems...Every time you solve one? Another is waiting to take its Place."

So here we are...All of Us as Sinners. In the Midst of Trouble. And only God knows Why.

Now: You are looking for Answers...That is only going to come from your Relationship with Christ. Yes you could Marry or not Marry that Guy. You could have Beautiful Children together and make Tons of Money. Only to see it all go up in Flames(The Sky is Burning)Ten Years down that Road out off 285.

So be very Careful here and forget about all this Denominational Nonsense. If He is calling you? Place all these People and Situations out of you Mind. You have the Luxury of being Educated and Young. You haven't defined yourself as a Christian or an Atheist at this Point. You are not a Wife or a Mother. You have not been down those Roads at this Point.

While you Struggle with this Issue of Faith? Don't Move. Settle that first with the Lord and then move. Read First Corinthians Seven--Pay particular attention to Verses 1/10/11/27.

This thing with the Lord and your planned Marriage? Settle the First before you Settle the Second.

Thanks for all of the comments! It's great to have positive encouragement and now your searching in the right direction!

This isn't a topic that I think I'll come to terms with over night, but thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
