How To Be Free From Guilt Jun 19 2012

“Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.” - Psalm 51:2-3

Are you filled with guilt? You shouldn't be, because it wipes you out physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Logically, when it comes to guilt, the best way to avoid it is simply to do what is right.

When you don’t do the right thing (and we all make mistakes), you first need to confess your sin to God with a genuine desire to get things right. I promise that when you pursue the forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ, with an attitude of seeking to get things right it will free you of guilt. He wipes the slate clean.

Second, seek forgiveness from those that you’ve wronged. Make restitution.

Third, (and so important) forgive yourself. Some struggle with this, but you should recognize that when God has forgiven you, you can forgive yourself.

Fourth, don’t confuse forgiveness with the removal of consequences. God forgives immediately, but you have to deal with the consequences of your sin.

The good news is you can be free of guilt when you seek to get things right — God’s way.

Glory be to God creator and master of all things. I have been so blessed by the message on how to be free from guilt. In our country there is an advocacy going on to have the capital punishment of death panult removed from our constitution on the basis that people reform but i have always refused. To me putting things right with God is one thing and serving their punishment is another. Indeed I strongly agreed that such people need to deal with the consequences of their sin individually although now they can have the Lord's grace.

I am not sure that the 3rd item can ever be necessary (or possible) if a person has repented and believes that God has forgiven him. I struggled with this until God showed me that I had not truly repented and yielded to His will and Lordship and therefore did not and could not believe subconsciously that He had forgiven me. When I finally rested in His will I felt His peace and knew He had forgiven me.
The way God got through to me was He showed me that if what I was saying was true then God was a liar. I was calling God a liar. But I was the liar. I was trusting in myself to worship Him the way Christ showed me. In one sense I was still captain and Lord of my own ship, "me". I just needed to rest in His will, trusting Him, and believing that He had forgiven me. It is a chicken and egg question as to which came first, more belief to trust Him or more willingness to do His will. They both come at the same time.
