The Body Is The Temple Of God Jun 01 2012

“It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glory to search out one’s own glory.” - Proverbs 25:27

Christianity teaches that the body is the temple of God’s spirit and that we are to take care of our bodies, yet eating disorders, gluttony and obesity in America are at epidemic levels.

The original intent of those who suffer from eating disorders, mainly teenage girls, is to get power over their bodies by eating less. Unfortunately, over time, they can become obsessed by controlling their food intake in a way that is similar to gluttony, but with the opposite effect.

There are three main types of eating disorders:

Anorexia—eating too little or being rigidly obsessed with avoiding perceived unhealthy foods.

Bulimia—binge eating and then throwing up or taking laxatives to avoid weight gain.

Exercise Bulimia—an obsession with exercise without enough caloric intake to replace the caloric output.

Each of these can bring great harm to the body. And like all addictions, whether food, booze, drugs, or sex, the addiction substitutes for the place of God in the addicted person’s life.

If you suffer from an addiction that harms the body, seek God’s forgiveness and His help. Then find others who can assist you in achieving victory over the unhealthy addiction. Remember, nothing is impossible with God.

Good piece this morning. I would add a medical point of order:
"Anorexia" is simply the loss of appetite; "Anorexia nervosa" is the disorder to which you refer, and relates to distorted body image, purposely not eating sufficient calories, etc.

Keep up the good work! sgy

As someone who used to struggle with an eating addiction, even as a Christian..this is great advice, In my coaching I share that what we are asking forgiveness for specifically is modern day idolatry...which is why it is so important for the church body as a whole to model living boldly and prospering but in a healthy way. The next generation is seeking authenticity and true spiritual power. I believe we can give it to them!

Letting a child, 8-12, become obese should be considered a form of child abuse. Unlike the eating disorders mentioned above, this is a learned habit that is just as harmful.

Praise the Lord! The beauty about siting under the word of God is that it produce results when needed. For the past week I kept hearing in my spirit, "The body is the temple of God." I took this as a warning to stop drinking soda because of the obsessive craving I developed for it. All was well, until today, I became depressed over bad news I rceived. I began to look for all sort of things to eat to fill the void. It did not help at all. the strangest things is my body felt full but I still felt empty. I strongly believe desiring any thing more then God is a sin and the end result is a spiritual disconnection from God. But I thank God for His word. Thank God for this message today. For the word of God is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, Palms119:105.
