Always in Harmony Mar 19 2010

"For there are three that bear record (witness) in heaven; the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one." - 1 John 5:7

The Trinity is a Biblical concept of God that has confused men for 2000 years. It is important to recognize that we don't believe in three Gods. We believe in one God in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, always in harmony with one another. The Holy Spirit will never guide us to do something that is contrary to the commands of God.

Here is an example of someone saying the Holy Spirit led in a direction contrary to the commands of God. In 2004, there was a USA Today headline declaring, "Gay Episcopal Bishop Says Holy Spirit Led Us." The article went on to quote the new priest as saying that, while he genuinely regrets the pain this caused some believers, he saw no reason to repent because "the Holy Spirit led us." Now, my friends, when pseudo-spiritual leaders give credit to the Holy Spirit for guiding man to do something that God says is evil, this is nothing but blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

God loves all sinners. He sent His son to die to pay the penalty for all sinners. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and the need to repent and receive God's gift of salvation through Christ. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are always in perfect harmony. Everything the Holy Spirit counsels us to do will be in obedience to the commands of God. The Trinity is about the perfect harmony of one God in three persons.

If someone says the Holy Spirit is leading them to do something that is clearly contrary to the word of God, then they are mistaken. This is the case for the Gay Episcopal Bishop, just as surely as it is the case for radicals on the other side of that argument, like the Westboro Baptist crowd.

Okay. When did Gods word change? I read in His word where this is a sin. If the Holy Spirit is going to lead someone to do something, he will not lead them to do something that is a sin. How can the Holy Spirit lead someone to be a leader of a church and then attempt to lead the people to do Gods will, when they are walking in direct conflict with the scriptures? We are commanded to love these people when they make the choice to live this lifestyle, and I do but we are not to agree with them. I know there will be some who will say they are born this way, I don't agree. This is a site that stands on Gods Word so that is what determines this devotion to be correct. Thanks Bryant for standing for the truth.

I agree with the intent of your devotion today. The Holy Spirit will not guide us to do anything contrary to scripture or His purpose. However, I do humbly disagree with the doctrine of the trinity. The first paragraph states that there are not 3 Gods; however, the last paragraph states "God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost are always...." "God the Father" is the only true phrase found in scripture. The reference you make to "God the Son” and “God the Holy Ghost” do not appear in scripture. There is one God (Duet 4:9) who does not share his supremacy (Isa 44:6). The Holy Ghost is God's Spirit and not separate from Him -- It is Him (John 4:24). That same God was His own Word (John1:1) that became manifest in the man Jesus Christ (John 1:1-14) It truly is a mystery how the one and only true God did this, But he did (1 Tim 3:16). I humbly submit (because I know the doctrine of the trinity is established in the Christendom); however, this doctrine is neither a pure monotheistic view of our God nor a reflection of scripture. Tim

The Trinity is actually not a Biblical concept at all. It was a creation of the early Catholic church and was hotly debated even then.
The passage Bryant cites (1 John 5:7) is regarded by Biblical scholars as a later addition to the text, designed to support the argument of the Trinitarians. In other words, somebody made it up and stuck it in the Bible.

Tim: The Trinity is a concept that's in the bible, but it is not an explicitly stated term. It is not based on just one or even a few passages, or the doctrine would never stand. It's based on many passages, from Genesis to Revelation, that indicate that the Father is God, Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, along with many passages that show the three are separate, distinct persons. The easiest to see is Jesus. Jesus accepted worship, which only God can do. He is called Lord by his disciples, and sometimes Lord and God. He was crucified for blasphemy when he put himself on equal footing with God. Old testament names and scripture passages about God are applied to Jesus in the New testament, such as in Hebrews when it says of Jesus: "But about the Son he says, 'Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.'" In Revelation it says "'I am the Alpha and the Omega,' says the Lord God, 'who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.'"

True, it's not easy to understand how there could be one God who exists as three "persons", but we're talking about the all-powerful, timeless creator of the universe. It's only a problem if we try to place God in a box based on our feeble and finite understanding.

Tim, Rick is correct in his comment, there is only one God, but he exists in the three different beings that we call the Trinity. No there is no term of trinity in the Bible, it is a concept that is agreed upon because of the many different scriptures that link them together. I was going to give some of the scriptures but Rick has already given them so I will not repost them. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God who is in the world today and He guides us and directs us in the paths that we are to go. The Holy Bible is the inspired word of God and it has been given to man for our directions in life. It is all true and good still for us to follow today.

"The Trinity is a Biblical concept of God that has confused men for 2000 years."

Maybe that's because it doesn't make any sense.

It has been said that we can apprehend God, but we cannot comprehend him. Some things are beyond human comprhension. The Scripture says that the ways of God are not our ways. If you do not accept that there is a certain element of "mystery" about God, you diminish God.

This is not surprising. There are many things in science beyond my comprehension. For instance, it is commonly accepted by scientists that the universe is expanding. What is it expanding into?? Einstein said that one of man's greatest illusions is our concept of time. His explanation is beyond me. Scientists know that something holds everything together, but they cannot begin to explain or understand it.

Mystery is just that; mystery.

Good point, Grant. I also don't understand quantum physics. How is it that light can act like both a particle and a wave at the same time? Why is it that we more closely we measure the velocity of an electron, the less we know about its position, and vice versa? Mysteries that seem to defy our human understanding.

If we cannot understand finite men it stands to reason that we certainly won't understand an infinite God.

Yes there are alot of things in the Bible that I do not understand but one thing I do know is it is true. When the Bible was compiled the books had to pass a test called a "canon." This was a measuring device or rod.
There was a large collection of books that had to pass the question of authenticity and authority. Until the the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 we did not possess any copies of the Old Testament earlier than A.D. 895. The books themselves also had imformation that has been backed up by Jewish Historians and other History books. The reason we didn't have the copies was the Jewish people had a desire for nobody to have the copies so they buried the copies that had become too old to use. These Scrolls helped to confirm that the scriptures was correct and fit to use for instructions. Any argument that the religions around today, had a part in forming the Bible needs to be backed up by something other than my opinion or anyone elses. I hope this will help us to understand how the word of God was compiled. I did not say this for arguments sake it is just what is written for our use to understand.
