Trusting God Dec 09 2009

"I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."" - Psalm 91:2

Think about all the different people we entrust our lives to. We trust pharmacists to give us the right pills from a prescription we can't read. We trust pilots we don't know to take us to the right destination, believing that they know how to fly that baby exactly where we need to go. As we sit in traffic on the interstate, we trust our lives to engineers and road construction crews, believing the bridges will hold.

Yet, people have trouble trusting God. They often say, "I can't see Him." Do we see the engineers who designed the bridge? Do we know the pilots? Not usually. Yet God, our Creator, who loves us more than anyone, who even sacrificed His Son for us to have forgiveness of sin and eternal life, is difficult to trust. It's amazing. It just doesn't make sense to trust imperfect men and not to trust a perfect God.

And trust is primarilly submission. When you get on that airplane, you don't get to interview the pilot or read his resume.

But God, did so much more to tell us and show us who he is!He redeemed you at the highest price imaginable.

If you haven't already, then say yes today. Humble your will. Submit to his. He will change you, forever.

Submission is a word I hear often. Can someone tell me the biblical meaning?

I'll give it a shot, and I hope that Jerry will as well.

Man, in his fallen state, is in rebellion against God. We want to "be master of our fate and the captain of our ship".

Jesus said that "the meek shall inherit the earth", a direct quotation from Psalm 37:11. This is an outward sign of an inward change. A humble and gentle heart.

Jesus also said that we should pray for "God's will be done"; not our will. When a person accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they submit their will to his will. They try and live their live in the way he taught by word and example.

No one can do this, of course, but is what the Christian seeks on a daily basis. Growth in this regard is the sanctification process. None of this is possible without Faith, which comes by Grace. Both original Justification (Saving Grace) and Sanctification (Santifying Grace) are free gifts from God. They cannot be earned.

Therefore, submission is that point at which each person "let's go, and let's God" as they say. It isn't something that you can will to do, but if you ask God to help you do it, he will not refuse you. All who "ask, seek and knock" with a humble heart will be saved.

You might want to read A.W. Tozer's "The Pursuit of God". It's a short, beautiful and inspiring work that I never tire of.

God Bless.

"my fortress..." I remember reading another writer describing God as my fortress to mean that as my fortress nothing can get to me that God does not allow. Now that gives me the peace that passes all understanding.
