When George Got a Whippin' Sep 04 2009

"The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever." - Psalm 19:9a

What does it mean to “fear” the Lord? Do you think of an angry God who’s looking to zap you when you do something wrong? Wrong image. To fear God has to do with reverence and respect for God. And it’s done by trusting that God knows what is best in our life. If we ignore what God says is best, we know we’re going to face some negative consequences. That’s a healthy fear of a loving God.

I remember when our oldest son, George, was about 2 years old - he was into everything. One day, I saw him walking around with a little screwdriver. I told him to give it to me, but he ignored me. Before I could take it from him, George stuck it in an electrical socket. And BOOM! He flew back in the dining room floor and sat there stunned. Then he started to cry, and then he got a whippin’ on top of that!

You may think, “what a mean ole’ daddy!” No, that’s not a mean daddy, that’s a loving daddy. Because I wanted it seared in his brain that there are certain actions that you do that bring about negative consequences that can be damaging to your health. I assure you he got a lot of love and comfort after that, and as far as I know, he didn’t repeat the experience. We, as parents, are not loving unless we create a healthy fear in our children! It’s so similar in having a healthy fear of the Lord. There will be negative consequences if we ignore the commands of God, because our Heavenly Father loves and cares enough about us to teach us what is best.

Yes, report it Nevermind

To fear God is to understand His omnipotence and our own weakness.

Just don't give your kid a whippin' in public. The nanny state will lock you up.

I'm not opposed to spanking at all, but to beat your 2 year old, barely more than a baby, after he almost electrocuted himself seems cruel. Why not be a good parent and cover up the outlets?

not to get a big controversy going about spanking, I spanked mine too when I was scared like Bryant. However, Bryant !! Don't you think that electrical shock was enough-lol !!! Just kidding.

I'm just guessing, but I doubt that the word "beat" would describe what occurred. Two year olds have to learn that no means no. It might save their life. I used to "thump" their hand or mouth, whichever was the offender with my middle finger. Just enough to get the point across.
Have a safe holiday weekend.

I spanked my children when they needed it but I never beat them. I may have used the word before when describing their whippings but my children knew they were to mind me or else they knew what they would receive. I get tired of hearing parents scream and threaten their children and never delivering nothing to them. There is a love between my children and myself because they knew I loved them and I would protect them but they were expected to act right also.

The very idea !! I doubt very seriously if his two year old was "beat" !! Not that anyone has to explain how hard they popped or what they popped. The point was when our Father is afraid for us, we suffer the consequences in order to remember our experience. Grant my beloved Grandfather that was the only Father I knew, thumped me as well, then cuddled and explained why he did it. I never doubted his love just as I never doubt the love God has for me and how well I know the meaning of "it hurts me more than it hurts you" through the years of raising mine. God bless all
