Old Age Ain’t For Sissies Aug 30 2009
“And even to your graying years I will bear you. I have done it, and I will carry you; and I will bear you and deliver you.” - Isaiah 46:4
Old age sure ain’t for sissies. In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon would agree. He wrote of how the things we take for granted when we’re young cause us to lose delight in living when we’re old.
Our eyesight grows dim—we start with reading glasses and then move to bifocals. Our hearing grows weak. We’re constantly saying “huh?” to our spouse. We have time to sleep late but we wake up early. Our hands start to tremble. Our desire for sex diminishes.
We become like the elderly man in the nursing home whose friends sent a beautiful young lady to his room for his birthday. She said, “Happy Birthday! I’m here to offer you super sex.”
The old man paused and then said, “I believe I’ll take the soup.”
Old age isn’t for sissies, and without God it can be meaningless. But with God, there is wisdom, strength, joy, and the hope that when the body finally gives out, there is life—real life—in heaven with God. It’s something to remember when you’re young and when you’re old.

Yes, report it NevermindI have been receiving your daily devotionals for some time. I usually am inspired by them and enjoy their content very much. However, today I thought the content was very inappropriate. I will not forward this to my friends for christian guidance. Remember, we should not conform to the world, but rather be an example for others to follow. God bless you.

Yes, report it NevermindI have reached the age where I am begnning to experience a lot of the physical effects mentioned here. What makes it even more difficult is that I have seen my parents generation decay and die. For the most part, those who live long and die a natural death the end is not dignified. People who were strong, self sufficient and proud are often reduced to a condition of dependence and confusion and embarrassment. None of us want this and it is what I fear most.
I'm not afraid to die. In one sense I look forward to it. But, the process of dying that way scares and/or depresses me. Fortunately, I have a large and loving family that I know will care for me. Many are not so lucky.
One thing we all can do is to be sensitive to the needs of our elderly friends and family. Little things mean a lot to them.

Yes, report it NevermindGrant I am like you I don't fear death when my time comes for me to go it will be a welcome event. I really intend to go in the Rapture. As to your comment about your family taking care of you, that is good, I was talking to my children one day about them taking care of me when I get old and my oldest daughter told me that they would, they would get me into the best Nursing Home around. With that I am hoping for a quick death without incident. Have a blessed day everyone.

Yes, report it Nevermindcould someone please explain the joke to me. Did he think she said soup sex or did he just not hear her at all? This devotion was inspiring to me being 25 years old. I can truly see how the mistakes a lot of my friends (and myself) are currently making that will have a lasting impact on our lives. But I thank God that I recognize God for who he is. And now I can take care of my body, mind and spirit so that I can be of use when I am of old age. Thanks for reminding me.

Yes, report it NevermindKeena, the joke is he thought she said soup OR sex. He took the soup. Pretty old stuff.
Jerry, so you think we are that close to the rapture? Can't say it doesn't look grim in the Middle East. I'm with you; anybody sends me to an "old folks home" and I'm bustin out!

Yes, report it NevermindGrant,
I believe the rapture is going to be the next big event and as far as I read there isn't anything else to be fulfilled in Bible prophecy before the 2nd advent of the Lord. There is a southern gospel song that I love to hear and part of it says "I'm not looking for a hole in the ground, I'm looking for a hole in the sky." Maybe we will be lucky and not have to be in a Nursing home. I have just put my brother in law in one and it is a sad thing to do. Well have a blessed evening.

Yes, report it NevermindKeena, Psalm 37:4 reads, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." I think it is important to daily be in the Scriptures to know the joy He alone gives to believers. Also, knowledge of the Scriptures helps us to want to align our desires with His desires and that brings joy when we don't want things that would be bad for us.
Thinking of the joke in this devotion, the man chose what God would want him to choose. His ungodly friends were just acting as would be expected for worldly people. So many of the troubles people have in life relate to the people they choose to hang out with. Psalm 1:1-2 reads, "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night." This passage was read at my father's funeral and I have always treasured it. It has good advice for a young person. God bless you for your respect for older people.
